In a moment, after finishing this real story, you will not believe your senses. It may not involve the drama as depicted in ‘Shawshank Redemption’, but it did involve remarkable ingenuity, lots of thinking and an escape tunnel of course.

Hold your ground.

An octopus staged a successful escape which would have involved casing the surroundings, making a slippery dash across a well-trod floor and squeezing himself down into a mere 150mm drainage pipe – a pipe which leads to the ocean nearby.

Unbelievable right? One of two octopus in residence at the National Aquarium of New Zealand, Inky had done this feat. As manager Rob Yarrell pointed out, it was the first escape he had ever been called to report in his years of steering the Marine Parade marine attraction.

“He managed to make his way to one of the drain holes which go back to the ocean and off he went – and he didn’t even leave us a message,” he said.

He said the next day staff found his trail and checked the pipework which Inky had climbed down – but he was already gone.

Mr. Yarrall said Inky had been with the aquarium since 2014 and was a very popular with the aquarium staff as well as the public.
