Scientists at the University of Southern California made the discovery that could be particularly a boon for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy or HIV+ patients or just about everybody like you and me.

Your immune system is made up of several organs like spleen, tonsils, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. These organs make and release lymphocytes, which are white blood cells classified as B cells and T cells. B and T cells fight invaders called antigens. Examples of antigens are bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, or bodily fluids from a sick person.


B cells release antibodies specific to the disease your body detects. T cells kill off the cells in your body that are being attacked by disease. When your immune system goes for a toss, all kinds of deceases and infections attack you and bring your whole system down.

Scientists at the University of Southern California did a ground breaking study and found that a person’s entire immune system can be rejuvenated by fasting for as little as three days as it triggers the body to start producing new white blood cells.

Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as “remarkable“.

How It Works?

Fasting diets have been criticized by nutritionists for being unhealthy for so long, but new research suggests that starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, the center piece of immune system, which fight off infections.

It could also help the elderly whose immune system becomes less effective as they age, making it harder for them to fight off even common diseases.  The researchers say fasting “flips a regenerative switch” which prompts stem cells to create brand new white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system.

It gives the ‘OK’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system,” said Prof Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California.

And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting. Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or ageing, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.

Prolonged fasting forces the body to use stores of glucose and fat but also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells. During each cycle of fasting, this depletion of white blood cells induces changes that trigger stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells.

In trials humans were asked to regularly fast for between two and four days over a six-month period. Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to ageing and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumour growth.

We are investigating the possibility that these effects are applicable to many different systems and organs, not just the immune system,” added Prof Longo.

How To Fast?

In ancient India, they found that in a cycle of 48 days, there are 3 days in which the body doesn’t want to eat food. People who are conscious of this cycle will naturally know it. But you don’t need to fret over it.

If you are new to fasting, you may need to take baby steps of 1 day fasting at a time before you can take on 3 days long fasting.

Remember when you fast for three days, the entire immune system will be revamped and regenerated. So here is something that you can follow immediately.

  1. Select a day in every fortnight, preferably the 14th day from full moon or 14th day from new moon.
  2. You will eat dinner the previous night and on the selected day, you will not eat anything except drinking water.
  3. If your activity on the day is such that you must eat something to cope up with life, then it it preferable to have only fruit diet.
  4. Have some kind of activity throughout the day that will make you at peace with yourself and the surroundings like – meditation, reading, contemplation etc.
  5. Avoid activities that need energy to be spent, like sports.
  6. At night, have dinner. Your one day fast is done.
  7. Soon you will be able to go on a 3 day fast. Even this one day fast will have similar effect on your immune system.
